IN THIS CASE: This busy family had just recently purchased their home in Bonita. Although the front yard had been landscaped by the previous owners, they were looking to give it greater curb appeal and more unique landscape features.
The lady of the house was interested in a having a small courtyard out front where she could occasionally enjoy her morning coffee or sit down with a neighbor for a visit. The couple's wish list included getting rid of the old concrete and replacing it with modern pavers, taking away all of the live grass and re-working all of the plants, bushes and flowers. They looked to our Landscape Designer for some fresh, creative ideas.
THE CHALLENGE: This yard had a few common issues that needed to be tackled.
As with many homes in Southern California, the builder had graded a lengthy drainage swale from the back yard to the side yard to the front yard. The trick would be to incorporate the swale into the design in a way that would allow for a courtyard feature without disturbing the swales original purpose, which was to divert water away from the house and toward the street. There also was a large tree that would need to be removed to clear the space for the new design.
After walking the property with the client and considering the best layout and use of the space, our Landscape Designer's plan included a dry river bed to cleverly incorporate the drainage swale that curved through the yard. The Designer created a beautiful entrance to a new circular courtyard that is flanked by charming stone columns topped by outdoor post lights. Our installation crew carefully laid walkway stones over the new dry riverbed to provide a natural segue to the courtyard and finished out the new flower beds with a tasteful mix of colorful drought tolerant plants and shrubs.
The landscape was updated and further enhanced with a state-of-the-industry artificial turf installation, while the new paver driveway and walkways clearly defined the new outdoor spaces, creating a striking new entry to the home.
