IN THIS CASE:
Our client started out with a blank canvas of a backyard. This brand new home needed structure, clearly defined outdoor living spaces and areas in which to gather and entertain. The client was looking for clean lines, a contemporary feel and a modern outdoor setting. The homeowner expressed an interest in having an easy-to-maintain flower garden with colorful plants and shrubs that would save on water and be beautiful throughout the year. We set out to create a landscape design that provides a refined outdoor living area that would allow for gradual changes in plant growth with considerable bursts of seasonal color.
The property's rear yard presented a common landscape challenge for owners of new construction homes...a gradual slope at the rear of the yard that backed up to the property line fence. The slope intruded on nearly half of the rear yard space, wasting a fair amount of the yard's area. The homeowner wanted to recapture as much usable square footage as possible.
The other issue for the homeowner was a need for a large amount of seating for backyard entertaining and a central fire feature that could be the showcase piece for the yard.
To capture as much outdoor living space as possible, we helped design a tiered retaining wall system that incorporated the right amount of drainage, including a french drain system and a complete high efficiency drip irrigation system.
The tiered landscape areas replaced the slope and allowed for long, lushly landscaped flower beds in which we were able to plant a mix of drought tolerant shrubbery and florals such as yellow kangaroo paw, red fountain grass and a graceful non-fruit bearing Olive tree.
To give the homeowner plenty of seating for guests, we incorporated a clever built-in paver bench directly into the retaining wall that ran the full length of the rear yard from its curved edge to the neighboring side fence. An elegant central column broke up the space to create separate conversation zones for the outdoor dining area (called out with a subtle paver inlay) and the dramatic, centralized fire pit that became the focal point for the entire landscape.
Needless to say, the client was thrilled with the outcome of her project and enjoys her peaceful evening sunsets around the glow of the outdoor fire pit and the view of the ever-changing colors in her gorgeous garden.
